In Re: Lenny’s Persuasion
It’s amazing how a picture can capture so much. There we all were on a beautiful sunny day at the end of our childhood, though we would have maintained steadfastly that we were already adult. I don’t actually remember the day the photographer visited our “Functions and Matrix” class which was held in a little room all by itself next to the library. The perspective of my experience as a teacher informs me that Miss Tichenor (AKA Tish the Dish) must have felt lucky to get this room. It was light and airy with a full wall of windows which was important in the days before universal air conditioning.
It strikes me that our poses are characteristic. Pemily Winchester gleefully anticipating. Me taking the whole thing as a kind of joke.. Craig Hayes turned away to comment to Mike Sconyers who listens pensively. Tim Smith quietly attentive and right up front while Bill Lemke waits as if he already knows the punch line Lenny is about to deliver. This class could get pretty wild on occasion. There was a lot of mental horsepower and more than a little youthful hormone in that room our senior year. Somehow Miss Tichenor was able to keep us reasonably under control and lead us into the knowledge of the mathematics of motion and change. – Bob Vitray
